Abstract
Discusses questions of identity and memory in the construction of ‘Europe’ and ‘European’ culture and identities in the wake of perestroika and German re-unification. It focuses on Germany as a symbolic condensation of many of the most problematic themes of the European past, looking particularly at Edgar Reitz’s Heimat. It asks who holds the franchise on representation of the European past, particularly in relation to the US.
