Abstract
Looks at the growth of tourism, a twentieth-century version of the pervasion of other countries by the west, and at some of the results of this two-way cultural contact. This includes the influence of ethnographic research on movements within western art such as Cubism, and the influence of Diego Rivera and other Mexican artists on US art. It also charts some of the effects of the globalisation of markets and communications systems on ‘third world’ forms of cultural production and symbolisation - what has become ‘tourist art’. New forms of ‘creolised’ art have also emerged from these.
