Abstract
Reflections on Edward Said’s question ‘what is worth saving and holding on to between the extremes of exile and … the often bloody-minded affirmations of nationalism? … are they simply two versions of paranoia?’. This points to paranoia as a place of caesura between personal anecdote and political discourse, and leads to a psycho-analytically informed investigation of the space of exile as psychical as well as physical space. Discusses nationalism and racism as in part constructs in the unconscious - ‘paranoid structures’ productive of particularly venomous relations to the Other.
