Abstract
While President Macron’s motives for calling the snap National Assembly elections remain unclear, it is certain that he very much counted on the Left to do what it does best: remain disunited and fail to campaign effectively. Happily, that did not happen. In four days, a programme was agreed upon, candidates were fielded, people set up lines of communication, created election posters, organised meetings and canvassing sessions. There was hope. But the future is uncertain.
