Abstract

Hunter begins with two texts in which the human nervous system is used as a metaphor for society: Friedrich Engels’ letter to Conrad Schmidt and James Kay-Shuttleworth’s 1832 treatise The Moral and Physical Condition of the Working Classes of Manchester. He considers the relationship between Marxism and Romanticism, the functions of ideology and ideas from Antonio Gramsci and William Morris.
