F.A. Hayek’s Competing Temporalities: Subjectivity, Agency and Market
Ryan Trimm

Abstract

Scrutiny of F.A. Hayek’s wor k reveals a tension also operative in the neoliberal world he helped to develop. On the one hand, there is a celebration of entrepreneurship as a form of agency, one extended even into knowledge; on the other, Hayek’s account of responsibility is less about the intention of our action and more making us responsible for their effects, regardless of our ability to steer outcomes. Using value form theory and Jacques Rancière’s account of competing temporalities in contemporary capitalism, I argue we might call the plotline within Hayek, stressing agency and entrepreneurship, the time of the self. The second aspect of Hayek depends on having our efforts subjected to a retroactive evaluation; I label this the time of the market. These divided temporalities allow us to better understand the self and its narratives under neoliberalism.
