Abstract
There is a good rationale for Keir Starmer in trying to pitch the next electoral battle as a choice about which party will run things most competently. But this may not be sufficient to solidly win over voters who did not support Labour in 2019 and the strategy may fail if an issue or crisis event allows Rishi Sunak to repair his party’s reputation for competence.
