Leadership, moderation and new alliances: The Portuguese Socialist Party’s recipe for electoral success

Abstract
The Socialist Party has played a pivotal role in shaping Portuguese politics for the past three decades. During this time, it has predominantly held power through both single-party majority and minority governments. The enduring appeal of the PS can be attributed to several key factors: their moderate programmatic stances, innovative strategic alliances, effective party leadership, and unwavering party unity. One of the PS’s noteworthy achievements has been its ability to not only usher radical left parties into the political landscape but also to maintain a steadfast commitment to meeting European Union requirements.
