Abstract

In recent decades the social democratic parties of Sweden, Denmark and Norway have adopted tougher stances on immigration and asylum policies in the hope of winning elections. However, the ‘authoritarian turn’ has distanced these parties from important aspects of their social democratic ideological roots. More importantly, the electoral gains this paradigm shift is supposed to bring are hard to establish.
