Abstract

This paper analyses the first period of the Greek Marxist-Leninist movement, from its birth in 1963 until the military coup of 1967, which brought this period to an abrupt end. The movement is often referred to as ‘Maoist’, but, as will be detailed in brief, this is a misnomer in the Greek case. Before discussing the all-important 1963- 1967 period, I will provide a brief pre-history of the movement, tracing its roots back to the 1950s. The central discussion within the article is the various activities of the Greek Marxist-Leninist movement in the 1963-67 period – namely, its publishing, trade union activity and student activism.
