Abstract

My article draws on my experience as a primary practitioner who has had responsibility for teaching the new relationships and sex education (RSE) curriculum. I consider how primary practitioners, aware that teaching certain issues can give rise to controversy, may impose certain limits on their own practice. These limits seem to derive from individual belief, from the way the role of the teacher is understood, and from what I term a ‘climate of fear’ currently prevailing in society in relation to particular issues, notably those of racism, gender and sexuality.
