Abstract
This paper presents my response to the call for evidence by members of the Labour government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review panel. I argue that the aims which the review sets out for the curriculum as it defines it do not generate that curriculum, as its broad features have already been decided. The stated aims are not expressed with necessary complexity or in required depth. After a sketch of the historical and political basis on which the current national curriculum is built, and a brief consideration of recent philosophical writing about curricular aims, I argue for a reintroduction of moves towards an aims-based curriculum, as begun under the last Labour administration.
