Abstract
This paper argues for ‘imagineering’ a future-oriented teaching workforce by reclaiming education as creative, ethical knowledge work oriented to planetary and social survival. Drawing on Freire, Indigenous seven-generation thinking and critiques of standardisation, it contends that current education systems are locked into past practices that exacerbate teacher burnout, student disengagement and ecological crisis. The paper proposes three interconnected strategies: learning to ‘read the world’; providing palliative or ‘hospice’ care to education institutions while inventing new practices within them; and developing curricula organised around community ‘problems that matter’. Through locally grounded, networked experimentation, teachers and students can reconnect knowledge with action.
